Last October 3, the Grade School Library launched again the Processed At Last!: New Books wherein the newly-acquired fiction, general reference, general collection and teachers' reference books were being displayed at the General Reference Section. For two days, students, teachers and other members of the community were allowed to browse, scan and borrow these books.

Blessing of the Newly-Renovated Library

May these walls be filled with laughter,

to let the Good Lord's love inside.

After two rigorous months, Grade School Library finally opened its doors once again to our dear students and teachers. Fr. Horacio Rodriguez, O.S.A. spearheaded and celebrated the blessing of the newly renovated Grade School Library last July 18, together with most of the School Officials and Grade School Coordinators.

It was immediately followed by fellowship and snacks-and-chips-to-share. The pictures taken were care of Mrs. Pureza Ekid.

GS Library Undergoing a Major Face Lift!

The Grade School Library is going through a total renovation which started last summer in order to make it more enticing for students, conducive for learning and to conform to the fast changing world of modernity. The students, teachers as well as parents will definitely love its far-fetched styles of ceiling and vast reading area to accommodate more students. The library upgrade is expected to be finished before the classes resume.

CSA Fun Run and Valentine's Day with the Librarians!

The Grade School Library staff joined the first and biggest ever CSA Fun Run 2011 last February 12 at SM Mall of Asia. Most of the librarians participated in the 3k and 5k Race Category. This Fun Run was the highlight and the culminating activity as we celebrated the Augustinian Jubilation. It was hosted by CSA Alumni Batch '86 and in cooperation with CSA, CSA Parent's Association and CSAMAA. This joint project was for the benefit of the scholars of Adeodatus Scholarship Trust Foundation, Inc. and the CSA-GK scholars.

Two days after the said FUN RUN, the GS Library staff also celebrated the Valentine's Day and at the same time Teacher's Day at exactly February 14. Overflowing of food was shared together and gift-giving, tons of flowers and chocolates were everywhere. Indeed, love is one of the core values here in San Agustin.

Processed At Last: New Books

The Grade School Library held the launching of new books entitled, "Processed At Last: New Books" which aims to inform the academic community i.e. students, teachers and non- teaching personnel about the recently acquired books. The new books were displayed at Reference Section of the library and students and teachers were invited to browse through them during their recess, break and dismissal time. They were allowed to check out the books on the last day of the said event.

Mortimer J. Adler once said, "Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life." In line with this, the Grade School Library honored last September 6- 10, WELL- READ teachers and students as well as the Top Borrowers of instructional materials for the month of June, July and August. The awarding took place in the GS covered court during the Grade level's Flag ceremony. The certificates and tokens were presented by Fr. Rodriguez and Dr. Amelia Ronquillo together with Mrs. Cristina Larracas and Mrs. Donnabel Amponin.

"Augustianians will always be Augustinians."-- This is very true as Mrs. Rhodora Sy and Mrs. Fe Edjan, former grade school teachers here in Colegio San Agustin, now home-based in the United States, donated books to the Grade School Library. Most of their donations are professional, reference and fiction books. The GS Library family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the generous donors.

Library Orientation to New GS Faculty Members

The new faculty members in the grade school department attended the library orientation held last June 3, 2010 in the Reference Section of the library. Mrs. Cristina M. Larracas, GS Library Coordinator, discussed the library policies, procedures, faculty privileges and other programs that the library offers. The event was capped off with a simple game on how to locate books. Teachers who participated were given some bookmarks, sticky notes and a cap.

CSA maintains three libraries: the Kinder and Preparatory Library, the Grade School Library, and the High School Library. GS Library is open class days from Monday to Friday and in the summer.

1. Library Hours

2. Procedures

Steps in Borrowing Books

2.1 Present the school ID and the book to the Circulation librarian.
2.2 Librarian scans teh school ID and the book's barcode.
2.3 Librarian stamps the date due in the date due slip found at the back cover of the book.

3. Loan Policy

Gr. 1 –2 can borrow 1 book at a time
Gr. 3 - 4 can borrow 2 books at a time
Gr. 5 –7 can borrow 3 books at a time

Books can be borrowed for one week and can be renewed for another week

General Reference works such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc. are generally used only inside the library premises.

Periodicals are also generally for library use only.

Teachers and other CSA employees can borrow a maximum of ten (10) books at a time for one month.

Alumnae can make use of the library facilities provided they ask permission from the Principal.

4. Fines and overdue books

Overdue books are fined two pesos (Php2.00) a day excluding Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

Lost book should be replaced or a full payment equivalent to the current cost of the book shall be enforced.

The Circulation Librarian issues library overdue notices at the end of the month.

On Computer and Internet Use

The library provides free access to the internet as part of its mission to provide the users with electronic resources necessary to meet the patron’s primary, informational, and educational needs.

The given guidelines and policies regulating its use is established in order to minimize disruptive or unsafe behavior and in order to increase access for research and other school related activities.

1. The computer corner is open from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday

2. Computer corner is for Grades 4-7, teachers' and other employees' use only

3. Users should write their name in the log in-folder before using the Internet.

4. Students may access the Internet during recess, lunch break and dismissal time. Teachers and other CSA employees may access the Internet on periods not covered by students break time.

5. The Internet should be used for school related research and work only

6. Users should report immediately to the librarian about any problems they encounter with the use of computers or printer.

7. Each computer should only have one user at a time. As consideration to other library users, conversations are to be kept quiet.

8. Files may be downloaded to a USB flash drive. The library is not responsible for damage to any user’s flash drive, or any damage to user data sustained while using the equipment.

9. Library staff may assist patrons in using the internet; however, staff can not guarantee expertise in every site, program or problem encountered online.

10. Printing fee
Php 5.00 per page (text only)
Php 10.00 per page (with picture)

Patrons may use their own paper however due to the cost of ink and printer maintenance, there is still a charge of 2.50 per page even when the library paper is not used.

11. The following are STRICTLY PROHIBITED in the use of computer with Internet access:

a. Downloading with pornographic materials, hate campaigns, violent videos, and other offensive materials
b. Changing the configuration and set up of the computer
c. Playing computer games of any sort
d. Eating or drinking
e. Installing computer programs in computer units
f. Removing or changing the properties of computer programs in the computer unit
g. Removing any computer hardware
h. Knowingly infecting the computer with a virus

12. Users violating these guidelines will be given disciplinary sanctions or may result in the loss of computer privileges in order to have an orderly system for computer and internet use in the library.

GS Library Specific Guidelines

For Students:

On Discipline

1. As center of study and research, SILENCE should at all times be observed in the library. Therefore eating, playing, sleeping and talking are strictly prohibited.

2. Strict disciplinary measure such as academic suspension, suspension of academic services or its equivalent shall be imposed to students found guilty of vandalism and misbehavior.

For Teachers/Staff

1. CSA ID is used for access to the library holdings and facilities.

2. Reservation of books is on first-come-first-served basis.

3. Magazines and other journals may be borrowed on weekends and should be returned the following Monday.

On Library Related Activities

1. Schedule use of library facilities at least two days before the activity.

2. Teachers are held responsible for the discipline of his/her students while in the library.

3. Teachers are likewise responsible for the return of all reading materials to their proper places after library activity.

Grade School Library General House Rules

1. The Grade School Library is open from 7:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday to Friday.

2. The students' and faculty’s identification card serves as their library card.

3. Observe specific library procedures and guidelines on borrowing and returning of books.

4. All borrowed books and other materials should be returned on or before their due dates. A penalty shall be imposed for non-compliance.

5. As a center of intellectual activity, SILENCE must be observed at all times. Eating, playing, sleeping and chatting are strictly prohibited.

6. Return books and other reading materials to their proper place after use.

7. Bags and other personal belongings are not allowed inside the library.

10. Parents and fetchers are not allowed to wait for their children in the library

Build-a-Book Parent and Child Story-writing Contest

The goal of the Build-a-Book Parent and Child Story-writing Contest was to allow students to bond with their parents and, at the same time, promote their love for reading and for books. Using a blank Klutz book and some arts and crafts materials; such as, foam shapes, googly eyes, an array of papers, and a glue stick, the participants create a multi-dimensional book on the theme, "Open Book, Open Doors". The participants were given the whole morning to finish their work.

Door Decoration Contest - November 16-20, 2009

The contest was open to grades 1-7 students, reading and art teachers, and class advisers. Participants used classroom doors and decorated them with books related to the theme: "Open Book, Open Doors". The contest showed which books were now popular among children and also made students aware about the various books and their authors.

Noted school personalities were invited to be contest judges - Ms. Maria Ethelrida Josefa M. Hernandez, CSA registrar and public relations and communications officer, Mrs. Victorina H. Tan, bookstore manager and former art coordinator, Mrs. Charmagne N. Ramos, media coordinator and selected reading teachers.

Winning sections were given a set of school supplies for the class.

Mr. Bimbo Papasin, author of the book "At Muling Ngumiti si Haring Araw", together with illustrator, Mr. Jan Sarmiento, conducted a storytelling session of their book.

Selected Grade 7 sections were invited to listen to Ms. Alice Mallari of Adarna Publishing House, author of Apolakus, a story about a boy wanting to use his power to ward off bullies in school. Students were given the chance to have a dialogue with the author.

Ms. Enoy Ferriols conducted a book talk/book launch in some Grades 6 and 7 sections.

Show and Tell with part creator and designer of Foldabots, Mr. Jomike Tejido.

Mr. Jomike Tejido introduced the Foldabots concept to selected Grade 3 students. . Foldabots are found in Pretzel's boxes in K-Zone and in Mr. Tejido's own Foldabots books, authographed copies of which were bought by the students after the talk.

Opening of Book Fair - November 9, 2009

The Grade School had a four-day book fair in the Grade School Covered Court. Participants were the following: Scholastic Books Inc., Adarna Publishing House, Goodwill Bookstore, Books for Less and Gayo Publishing House. Selected books for Grade School were sold. This special event enabled parents and students to buy quality books at reasonable prices and stimulated the pupils' interest in reading as well.

Storytelling Sessions in the Library - November 5-12, 2009

In cooperation with the Filipino coordinator, selected Filipino storytelling contest winners were invited to tell a story during the children's recess / lunch break. This activity encouraged more students to visit the library, to borrow and to read more books.

November Book Month Celebration 2009

The Grade School launched English Month and Book Month with a paraliturgy in the Grade School quadrangle. The paraliturgy was led by Fr. Horacio Rodriguez, O.S.A., and was attended by Dr. Amelia Ronquillo, Mrs. Maxima Hadarly and the library staff. Using the theme, "Open Book, Open Doors", the library promoted the importance of reading and the love for books.

The library activities for the month were announced. Activities included are the following: storytelling sessions, book fair, talks by authors and illustrators, Amnesty Week, Door Decoration Contest, Build-a-Book Parent and Child Story-writing Contest and a lot more.
